Montgomery Area Transit System is the operator of mass transportation in metropolitan Montgomery, Alabama. The organization was founded in 1974, after years of tumultuous relations between private bus operators and riders. In 1998, the city performed a cost cutting experiment by replacing all 17 routes with a demand-response system.^{[citation needed]} After two years of ineffective service, fixed routes returned.
