Mount Burke, also known as Burke Mountain, is a mountain located in northeast Coquitlam, British Columbia, north of Port Coquitlam on the ridge system leading to Coquitlam Mountain.[1] Most of the mountain is part of Pinecone Burke Provincial Park.[2] The mountain is a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, and winter snowmobile trips. Mount Burke is not to be confused with Mount Burke, a low hill at the end of Cedar Drive in Coquitlam near Minnekehada Park[3].

Major access is via Coast Meridian Road. Rural development currently occupies the mountain base, however the City of Coquitlam plans to build 10,000 houses on the mountain near the end of Coast Meridian Road. With several housing developments already complete and a community plan that includes new schools, shops and parks, this area of Coquitlam, often referred to as Burke Mountain, is seeing rapid growth[4].

History

Mount Burke was named for Edmund Burke by Captain George Henry Richards of the HMS Plumper while surveying Burrard Inlet in 1860.[5]

In the 1970s, the mountain was the site of a minor ski development, including a lodge at the top of the mountain, a rope tow, and a ski village lower on the mountain. The ski area was abandoned when a fire burned down the lodge.[6]

The mountain was placed in Pinecone Burke Provincial Park on the park's creation in 1995.[7] The cabins still exist, and are leased from BC Parks since they are now on park land.
