Early life

Bensouda was born and raised in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family with both Danish and north-west African roots, specifically Gambia, Mali and Morocco. Bensouda is the eldest child of three. Nabiha grew up listening to a variety of genres of music, from her mother’s Malian lullabies to disco, soul, reggae, rock, R’n’B, and electronic.

Career

Bensouda’s first album is scheduled for release in Denmark February 1, 2010 on iTunes and in stores.[1] Bensouda co-wrote all of the songs on the album together with her London-based Swedish producer/writer, Carl Ryden who produced the album. Some songs also incl. collaborations with songwriters Nina Woodford, Cozi Costi and Terri Walker. Most of the album is mixed by Jeremy Wheatley, except 4 songs which are mixed by Carl Ryden and Peo Haggstrom.[2] Bensouda was from the beginning developed and A&R'd by her manager Mette Buhl, who continues to A&R Bensouda.

Deep Sleep, the first single from the album, is a retro-pop English-language song whose lyrics praise sleeping or at least staying in bed all day. The middle-8 of “Deep Sleep” is an African- and French-language lullaby from Mali, which Bensouda’s mother used to sing to her when she was a child.[1]

So far ”Deep Sleep” has peaked as 5 on the overall Danish airplay Chart [2] and the video has more 500,000 views on YouTube already.[3] Bensouda has already played a number of large venues including opening for James Morrison at Falconer Theatre in Copenhagen and playing at the Danish National Football stadium. This performance was noted in a strong review by leading Danish music magazine Gaffa. ”Deep Sleep” was recently ”Song of The Day” on the British musicsite Popjustice.com and Bensouda was ”Artist to Watch” on US site Concreteloop.com. [1]
