Early life

Kumaresan Duraiswamy, better known as Napolean, was born on 2 December 1963—the fifth of six children. Hailing from a middle class family, Napoleon was well acquainted with hardship and hard work from a very young age. His father, an agriculturist, worked hard on his farm while his mother busied herself with bringing up 6 children. A graduate of St. Joseph's College, Trichy - one of the premier educational institutions in South India - he is also an accomplished sportsman and an athlete. With a vision to globalize, he has played a major role in setting up the global offices of Jeevan Technologies in the USA and New Zealand.

He has close relations in valangaiman an area near kumbakonam and his birthday is being celebrated every year as a grand function in this area.

Career

Politics

After college, he headed off to the city in pursuit of his dreams. It was during this time that he was touched by the ideologies of the DMK. The humanitarianism embodied by the party struck a chord in the idealistic youngster and he decided to join the party under the wing of his uncle, K.N. Nehru, a great leader and the Public Welfare Minister at that time. Politics gave Napoleon ample scope to develop his leadership skills and extend help to the masses. Identifying himself with the common man, Napoleon was soon hailed as a people’s leader.

Napoleon contested his first General Election in 2001 from Villivakkam constituency (Asia’s largest constituency) and was unanimously elected as MLA. Napoleon continued his service as MLA until 2006.

Napolean lost his MLA seat, as a DMK candidate, in 2006 State assembly election in Mylapore constitueny to actor S. V. Shekhar, of AIADMK, and is currently running in Perambalur constituency, for an M.P. seat, for DMK in the 2009 Lok Sabha election. He won the elections and took oath of office as Minister Of State for Social Justice And Empowerment in the Central government

Films

At 27, watching Udhaya, a Telugu movie, Napoleon felt an urge to act. Until then, Napoleon had appeased the artist in himself by writing poetry. But now, the time was ripe for bigger and better things.

Best known as a versatile actor, Kumaresan also known as Napoleon entered the Tamil film industry in 1991. His first film “Pudhu Nellu Puddhu Nathu” directed by Bharathi Raja gave him ample scope to showcase his acting abilities. After all, not every 27 year old can play the part of a 60 year old man with panache!

His performance was impressive enough to bag him many more roles. With “Seevalperi Pandi,” his career as an actor reached a new high. Today, Napoleon is considered as an actor who lives his roles with perfect realism.

His movies include the popular roles of Mundakkal Shekharan in Devasuram as well as in its sequel Ravanaprabhu, Gurupadam in Vattaram, Mohammed Mohideen Khan in Pokkiri and Kulothunga Raja Cholan in Dasavatharam.

Some of the forthcoming Tamil and Telugu films that feature Napoleon are Saleem, Oye!, Pallikondapuram and Azhagarmalai
