National Radiologic Technology Week (NRTW) is an annual event to celebrate the contributions of the radiologic technologist to health care and to increase awareness of their contributions to the health care industry.
Technologists work in fields such as mammography, CT imaging, MRI, nuclear medicine, imaging in interventional radiology, sonography, fluoroscopy, or general radiography.[1] To become a certified technologist, one must complete an accredited two-year, hospital based program or a program at a two or four-year college or university then pass an exam to become nationally certified. To remain certified, continuing education credits must be earned.
NRTW takes place nationwide in clinics, hospitals, and educational institutions during the month of November to coincide with the discovery of x-rays by Wilhelm Roentgen on November 8, 1895. For the year 2010, the event will take place Nov. 7-13. Each year, a theme is chosen for the event. This year's theme is "R.T.s: Delivering Picture-perfect Care." This theme is designed to stress the importance of each image taken by a radiologic technologist.
NRTW is sponsored by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT), an organization that represents those in radiology, radiation oncology, nuclear medicine, mammography, sonography, and other modalities included in radiologic sciences. The ASRT mission is to promote professional growth through education and research, promote leadership and service, and develop the radiologic technology community through shared ethics and values.[2]
The first National Radiologic Technology Week held by the ASRT was on July 22-29, 1979 to honor the important contributions of those in medical imaging, whose work is often underappreciated. The date for the celebration was changed to November in the following years.
