National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (abbreviated as YunTech), is one of the top technical institutions of higher education in Taiwan. Founded in 1991, it has about 334 full-time academic staff and 9,700 students in 2010 with 20 departments, 34 master's programs, and 12 doctoral programs.[1]. Graduate School of Education at Shanghai Jiao Tong University announced the ranking of the most excellent universities in Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau in 2011. YunTech was ranked as the 51st most excellent universities in the ranking list.

About

Located in Douliou, Yunlin, Central Taiwan, with access via highways and railway system, 226 km south of Taipei city, 141 km north of Kaohsiung city, 70.0 km south of Taichung City and 50.6 km west of Sun Moon Lake, YunTech is characterized by its spacious and scenic campus and artistic buildings that occupy 60 hectares. The area surrounding the university was designed to host the county administrative buildings, including the County Government, County Council, County Constabulary, Indoor Arena, Art Exhibition Center, and Sports Park, etc.

The school campus is sustainable and compatible with the nature. Buildings and facilities are built to be humanistic, offering an open and friendly study environment. Parking lots are sufficiently provided for different vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, and bicycles. Monitoring systems, access control and regular patrol on campus are performed efficiently to avoid burglary as well.

The school emblem resembles a hexagonal polymer, which is constructed from the initials of YunTech. It symbolizes technological integration and universal harmony, while the radiating lines signify both the internal power and outgoing characteristics.

History

On November 27, 2010, YunTech celebrated its 20th anniversary. Emerged from a barren land, YunTech has become an institution of higher education. Its story dates back to 1988.

On May 19, 1988, the county government of Yunlin requested the Ministry of Education to provide land for National Yunlin Institute of Technology. The Yunlin County Government donated approximately 60 hectares of Taiwan Sugar Corporation land to the institute. Three hundred and fifty camphor trees were planted to commemorate this date.

On August 1, 1989, the Ministry of Education appointed Dr. Wen-Shion Chang as the Director of the Preparatory Office of National Yunlin Institute of Technology. In the beginning, the institute hired approximately 100 scholars and experts from universities and the central government to form roughly twenty research teams. It took around one year to finish the research projects.

On August 10, 1990, the ground-breaking ceremony was initiated.

On Just 1, 1991, Dr. Wen-Shion Chang was appointed as the first dean of the college which consisted of eight four-session departments, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Management, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Industrial Design, and Commercial Design. Simultaneously, graduates of vocational schools started enrolling as students.

On September 25, 1991, 352 undergraduates from eight departments began their studies at the brand new campus. On September 26, 1991, the school held its opening ceremony for the first semester.

In 1992, the two-year program began admitting junior college students to the Departments of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Environmental and Safety Engineering, Industrial Management, Business Administration, Management Information Systems, Industrial Design, and Commercial Design.

In 1993, approved by the Ministry of Education, Masters’ programs in Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, and Industrial Engineering and Management were added. Masters’ programs in Industrial Design, Electrical Engineering, Electronic and Information Engineering, Management Information Systems, Interior Design, Chemical Engineering, Construction Engineering were also added.

In 1994, the Masters’ programs in Environmental and Safety Engineering and Visual Communication were added. The Department of Commercial Design was renamed the Departmental of Visual Communication.

In 1995, the two-year programs of Department of Finance Management and the two-year extension education programs of Management Information Systems and Finance Management were added. In addition, teacher education programs were opened to promote the growth of secondary school teachers and the development of professionals in business organizations.

In 1996, the two-year program of Applied Foreign Languages was established, and students from the two-year extension education program were admitted.

Originally named as National Yunlin Institute of Science and Technology, YunTech was renamed the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology on August 1, 1997. Since then, YunTech has worked diligently to develop a superb learning environment.

In 1998, three new Masters' programs in Construction Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Disaster Prevention were added along with a Doctoral program in Engineering Science and Technology.

In 1999, the Doctoral program in Business Administration was established.

In 2000, the university instituted the following programs: Doctoral program in Design, Masters’ programs in Technological and Vocational Education, Finance Management and Applied Foreign Languages, two undergraduate programs including Construction Engineering and Applied Foreign Languages, and four extension education programs leading to Masters’ degrees in Management Information System, Management Administration, Industrial Management and Cultural Heritage Conservation.

In 2001, the following programs were added: Masters’ programs in Chinese Studies and Leisure and Exercise Studies, four-year programs in the Department of Environmental Safety Engineering and the Department of Finance. The Department of Accounting was also added.

On August 1, 2001, Dr. Tsong-Ming Lin succeeded Dr. Wen-Shion Chang as the president of YunTech.

In 2002, the Ministry of Education approved doctoral programs in Industrial Engineering Management and Chemical Engineering, and master program in Information Management.

In 2003, the Ministry of Education approved to establish Graduate School of Science and Technological Law, Digital Media Design Department, Graduate School of Optoelectronics, master program in Accounting, and doctoral program in Information Management.

In 2004, Department of Electronic Engineering received accreditation from the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) in April. In May, the Ministry of Education approved Graduate School of Global Logistics Management, and master program in Disaster prevention and Environmental Engineering.

In 2005, YunTech joined worldwide「Physics Enlightens the World」 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Einstein’s death on April 18. In May, YunTech hosted 「2005 SouthEast Asian Vocational Education International Conference」. The Ministry of Education approved to establish doctoral program in Financial management department, master program in Communication Engineering, and Creative Design Department.

On February 15, 2009, Dr. Yeong-Bin Yang took office as the third president of YunTech. Former president Tsong-Ming Lin was appointed as Vice Minister of Ministry of Education, Republic of China.

2004

  1. The university was ranked number 1, along with National Taiwan University and other two prominent universities, for Integrated Research Achievements by National Science Council in 2002.
  2. The university was evaluated as outstanding in counseling and student affairs by Chinese Guidance and Counseling Association in 2004.
  3. The university was evaluated as outstanding in the assessment of "Excellent English Living Environment" conducted by the Executive Yuan.
  4. The university was recognized as an excellent institution hiring indigenous people.
  5. The university was ranked 6th in the survey of "Enterprises-Most-Valued Graduates" by Central Daily News.

2005

  1. According to Common Wealth Magazine, the expenditure the university spent in 2005 on research and student cultivation was ranked 9th among universities in Taiwan.
  2. The university was conferred an Excellent Student Counseling Award by the Ministry of Education.
  3. The university was assessed as first class by the College’s Teacher Education Centers.
  4. The university had outstanding performance in the industry-academic cooperation and research development in 2005, with a subsidy of approximately NT$570,000,000. The average annual output value of each teacher was about NT$1,790,000, which ranked within the first ten in Taiwan. In 2006, the annual output value of each teacher increased to NT$1,980,000.
  5. The university conducted National Universiade Sport Games in April 2006 and gained high appreciation both inside and outside Taiwan. The university also became the first technological university in history that undertook National Universiade Sport Games.
  6. The university was assessed as excellent in May 2006 by the university college evaluation of Taiwan Assessment and Evaluation Association.
  7. The subsidy the university gained in July 2006 from the Teaching Excellence Award Project of the Ministry of Education was ranked highest among all the technological universities in Taiwan.
  8. Since August 2006, the university has been authorized by the Ministry of Education to undertake the faculty’s promotion application.
  9. The university was chosen for the 7th time (successively) by Chinese Institute of Engineers in June 2008 as an outstanding university that conducts industry-academic cooperation.

2008

  1. The university was chosen for the 7th time (successively) by the Chinese Institute of Engineers as an outstanding university in aspects of industry-academic cooperation performance in May 2008.
  2. The university won the first prize at "Technological and Vocational University Performance Competition" in August 2008.
  3. The team formed by professors and students of Department of Information Management won second prize at "2008 IBM SOA Contest-Taiwan".
  4. The students from Department of Graduate School of Mechanical-Engineering won first prize for Robot Appearance Design at "2008 Intelligent Robot Contest".
  5. The professors and students from Department of Electronic Engineering won three gold medals and three silver medals with six inventions presented at IENA International Exhibition "Ideas-Inventions-New Products" in Nuremberg, Germany on November 3, 2008.
  6. The students teamed IDSL won second prize at IBM Service-Oriented Architecture Software Competition on November 5, 2008.
  7. Student Yun-Shen Lin from Department of Electrical Engineering won second prize for Applied Electrical Engineering (Audiovisual Electronic) at the 38th National Vocational Training Competition in November, 2008.
  8. Extra-Curricular Activities Section and Rover Scout Crew were respectively awarded by Ministry of Education as the "Great Organization for Organizing Students' Clubs and Service Learning in the year of 97" and the "Excellent Students' Club."
  9. The System Chip Laboratory of Department of Electrical Engineering won two gold medals at Digital Signal Processing Creative Design Contest host by Ministry of Education in December, 2008.
  10. Student Wei-Chen Zu of Department of Visual Communication Design won Selected Participant Award at Warsaw International Poster Biennial in December 2008.
  11. The university was chosen as a great school for the "Great Water-Saving Organization and Personal Activity" by Water Resources Agency, Ministry of Economic Affairs in December, 2008.
  12. The juniors Bin-Yi Chen and Wei-Zhen Chen from Department of Creative Design won the gold medal at Uneec Applied Design Award in December 2008.

2009

  1. The students of Department of Digital Media Design received the "Masterpiece Award" for their video clip from Council of Cultural Affairs in January 2009.
  2. The students of Department of Digital Media Design received many awards at the second Roles of Games Design Competition in January, 2009.
  3. The university was assessed as an excellent school for the "Setting Life Education into Action" from Ministry of Education in February, 2009.
  4. The students such as Li-Zhen Chen, etc. of Department of Digital Media Design won the second prize at the Net Animation Competition in March 2009.
  5. The teachers and students of Department of Industrial Management won the first prize and excellent prize at the college-level essay competition of the "Cooperation of Industry and Technology" in March 2009.
  6. The Department of Industrial Management received the certification from Institute of Engineering Education (IEET) in March 2009.
  7. The student Shu-Rong Liao of Department of Industrial Design won the first, second and third prizes at Acrylic Creative Design Competition in April 2009.

  33. Yu-Juan Gao, the student of Graduate School of Digital Media Design received the second prize at National Online Creativity Competition-Computer Animation.
  34. YunTech received awards from the plan which encourages students to participate in international arts and design competitions from Ministry of Education. The university received NTD 1300000.
  35. Shiou-Mei Wu, the nurse of YunTech was awarded as an outstanding nurse by National School Health Association, R.O.C.
  36. Shin-Ru Tsai was awarded as an outstanding fresh writer at Yushan Literature Prize held by Cultural Affairs Bureau of Nantou County.
  37. Shi-YIng Zhang, the associate professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering advised students from different departments to take part in Light Metal Competition and the students received awards at the competition.
  38. Chen-Han Ye of Graduate School of Digital Media Design received an award at Light Metal Competition. He took part in this competition with students from Graudate School of Materials Science, Graduate School and Department of Mechanical Engineering.
  39. Dr. Fu-Ching Wang and Jun-Hong Dai, the alumnus of Graduate School of Science and Technology Law received an award with their paper at Construction Research Competition of the year of 2010 held by Taichung City Government.
  40. Jia-Ming Yang and Hwa-Da Hsieh received Interior Design Awards in 2010.
  41. Jia-Wei Liou of Department of Foreign Languages received scholarship from ETS. Her TOEIC score was 900. She received USD 1000 from ETS and there were only 10 people receiving this scholarship in Taiwan.

2011

  1. Students of Industrial Design were awarded at Dassault Systemes Design Competition 2010.
  2. Teachers and students of Industrial Management were granted as excellent at 2010 Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers.
  3. YunTech was one of the top universities of The Pedagogy Excellence Project of 2010-2011 by Ministry of Education.
  4. The research result of Dr. Tsi-Wen Zhong of Chemical Materials Engineering was published by Scientific American.
  5. The paper of Dr. Yao-Rong Huang of Architecture and Interior Design was granted as Excellent International Conference Paper at Environmental Design Research association (EDRA)
  6. Ming-Yu Li of Graduate School of Cultural Heritage Conservation was granted at two most significant international design competitions: best of the best of 2010 RedDot design award and 2011 iF award for the product of Taiwan Tea Bags.
  7. The paper of Dr. Szu-Yu Tzeng of Department of Architecture and Interior Design was granted as outstanding by Architecture Institute of the Republic of China in 2010.
  8. Depatrment of Industrial Design was granted Silver Award at the 15th International Bicycle Design Competition (IBDC).
  9. Zong-Hui Lai, a student of Department of Digital Media Design, was granted for his product in Monstra, Culf Film Festival and so on.
  10. YunTech was granted 1 gold and 2 silver awards at the 39th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.
  11. YunTech is one of enterprises' 10 favorite universities in 2011.
  12. Students of Department of Electrical Engineering received awards at Open Source Contest 2011.
  13. Mei-Chun Lin, a master student of Business Administration, was granted at the 6th Distribution and Global Logistics Conference.
  14. Department of Industrial Design received 13 awards at Acrylic Design Competition of 2010.
  15. Dr. Hsuan-Ting Chang of Department of Electrical Engineering was elected as a senior member of Optical Society of America (OSA).
  16. Students of Visual Communication Design and Digital Media took part in 2011 Design Supreme held by Council For Cultural Affairs and Taichung City Government and the exhibition venue design was granted as Supreme Award.
  17. President Yeong-Bin Yang was elected as President of Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET) again this year.
  18. YunTech was ranked as the 51st of the most excellent universities among Taiwan, Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau's universities. 
  19. YunTech has won first place among technological universities in the national award-winning contest entitled "It's Show Time", held by Ministry of Education for 6 years.
