Netherlands Football League Championship

Netherlands Football League Championship

The Netherlands Football League Championship (Dutch: Nederlands landskampioenschap voetbal) is a Dutch national football championship that began in 1888. The Royal Netherlands Football Association (Dutch: Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbalbond, or KNVB) has awarded the championship since 1898. Until 1954, Dutch football was an amateur competition. The national champion was determined by means of a championship competition between the champions of the different head classes, which were divided regionally until 1950. This system continued for two years after the introduction of professional football in 1954 until the creation of the Eredivisie for the 1956-57 season. Starting with the 1956-57 season, the winner of the Eredivisie is recognized as the national champion.

[*] RCH moved in 1932, from Haarlem to the neighboring neighbour municipality of Heemstede. For this reason, it eventually changed its name in 1965 from the name of Racing Club Haarlem to Racing Club Heemstede.

[**] In the southern district some games for the 1944-45 competition were played, but the competition was rapidly cancelled.
