Needamangalam taluk is a taluk in the [[Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The headquarters of the taluk is the town of Needamangalam.


Needamangalam (alternate name: Nidamangalam) is a Taluk in Thiruvarur district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The celebrated battle between the armies of Uthiyan Cheral Athan and Chozhan Karikaal VaLavan during the Sangam Age, approximately around 100 CE was fought at Venni ( Sangam poem: Purananuru-66) in the outskirts of Nidamangalam, at the place where main Vennar river branches into three. The northern branch retains its original name, Vennar. Other two branches are Paminiyaar and Koraiyar. They flow down to Muthupet Lagoon and from there it joins the sea.

It is located 35 km east of Thanjavur and 318 km from Chennai.

Needamangalam, a municipality town surrounded by lot of small villages, has police station, Railway station (best profitable station in Tamil Nadu), bus terminal, fire service station, Taluka office and banks. This is a junction for two highways,one national highway from trichy to nagapattinam and the other state highway from kumbakonam to mannargudi.

Needamangalam is abutted by the Vennar River in the north and the Korayar river in the south.

Needamangalam is notable for the temples located around it. Needamangalam is a main hub for the nearby villages. Majority of population here are farmers. Back in the 1950s - 1970's it served as a Trade route for Paddy crops, and other crops cultivation.Many people originally from Needamangalam now work in Gulf countries and United States. This is the native place of musician Neelakanda Shastri and former Chief Election Commissioner of India Mr. N. Gopalaswami.Few People from Tamil film industry like Cinematographer Gopinath and Director Sami are also from here.

3KM from Needamangalam one place is there that is called as Munar Thalaippu, this is the picnic spot for the people living in Needamangalam.

Lot of temples (Kasi Viswanathar Temple, Santhana Ramaswamy Temple, Kogamugaeswarer Temple, Mariyamman Temple, Drowpathi Amman Temple,Iyyappan Temple, Bathrakaliamman Temple & Aangeneya Temple)one Church & Masque are also there.
