A new greenfield Pune International Airport for the Pune metropolitan region has been proposed for a long time and Government of Maharashtra has entrusted the responsibility to Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) for executing the new Pune International Airport project.[1] Probable sites for this project had earlier included areas around Talegaon Dabhade and Saswad near Pune. The current area under consideration is the area between Chakan and Rajgurunagar, namely around the villages of Chandus and Shiroli both situated at a distance of 40 km (25 mi) from Pune along the Pune - Nashik National highway, National Highway 50. The new Pune International Airport would be a gateway of Pune and western Maharashtra to the rest of the world. Agricultural and floricultural exports are expected to get a faster movement to its international markets on the completion of this project.

This airport will spread over 2535 hectares (6338 acres), so it will be the largest airport in India after completion. This airport will have two runways. After construction of the new airport Pune will get more international flights.

MADC has currently requested for proposals from consultants to conduct techno-economic feasibility studies, assist in obtaining the required statutory approvals and provide project management services. This airport is expected to start by 2011.[2]

This Airport will have two terminals Terminal 1A and 1B. There will be two runways, Runway 1 at north and Runway 2 at south. This airport will have one air traffic control tower (ATC Tower).

Need for new airport

Pune is a growing center in Automobile, Education and Information Technology. The old airport at Lohegaon (Pune International Airport) is operated by Indian Air Force (Military Airport). Though it served the city for a long time the old airport has got only 4 gates and is not in situation to carry traffic as an international airport does. On the other hand there is a growing demand for air traffic to Pune for Automobile and Information Technology. Many foreign students and students from other towns and cities in India come to Pune for education and also there is a growing demand for agricultural and floricultural trade. The old airport at Lohegaon can not handle Cargo flights. Hence this new airport was proposed for city of Pune in western part of Maharashtra state in the Republic of India.

Connection

Internal

This airport is located 40 km from Pune near Shiroli and Chandus villages 6 km from Chakan. The national highway from Pune to Nashik (NH 50) connects Shiroli to Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. A road has been proposed to connect Shiroli to the new airport. In addition a metro rail has been proposed from the new airport to Moshi. Moshi will be further connected to the Pune Metro project. There are demands to start suburban trains on Rajgurunagar to Pune Junction patch on the proposed Pune - Nashik Road railway line to have connectivity to the new airport.

World Wide

This airport will be the gateway of Pune City and Pune Metropolitan Region to the world. The expected flights from here are to North America (mostly Canada and the United States of America), European Union nations (mostly Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom) and Asia (mostly Iran in Middle East; Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in the Gulf; Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand in South East Asia and the People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea and Japan in East Asia). Few flights will also operate from here to Africa (mostly Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya and South Africa). New Pune international airport can serve as stop for flights from the Africa/European Union nations to East Asia/South East Asia.

Cargo

This airport can serve as cargo transport for Pune district and western Maharashtra from/to other destinations in the world. Hence four international airlines namely, Delta Cargo, Lufthansa Cargo, Singapore Airlines Cargo and SriLankan Airlines Cargo want to make this airport as their international hubs. Indian cargo companies like Air India Cargo, Blue Dart Aviation and Deccan360 will serve for domestic cargo. British Airways World Cargo, Cathay pacific cargo, DHL Express, FedEx Express and Volga-Dnepr Airlines are other foreign airlines interested to operate cargo flights.
