Scion, officially registered as New Zealand Forest Research Institute Limited, is a New Zealand Crown Research Institute. Its origins as a research organisation started in 1947 as part of the New Zealand Forest Service. The primary areas of research, science and technology development for Scion are in the areas of forestry, wood products, wood-derived materials and other biomaterials sectors.

Scion became a Crown Research Institute in its own right in 1992, under the name New Zealand Forest Research Institute. In 2005 the new trading name Scion was launched. The name scion is a metaphor, which according to the organisation's website, means that "All parts of the Scion organisation share the same DNA, or the forestry legacy, that was established as part of the original Forest Research Institute."[2]

Scion's employs approximately 320 staff, with it's principal campus the main part of the Te Papa Tipu Innovation Park in Rotorua. It also has an office on the campus of the University of Canterbury in Christchurch with 22 staff, as well as smaller offices in Auckland and Wellington.

Each year the Institute awards the Scion Suffrage Centennial Scholarship to a Year 13 school leaver from one of the five Rotorua secondary schools.[3] The winner must be female and intending to study a science-based qualification at a New Zealand university. The scholarship is worth $2000 (NZD) and also carries with it summer work for the duration of the winner's undergraduate degree course.[4]
