History

2002-2004

Nicktoons was launched on 22 July 2002 as "Nicktoons TV". It aired Nicktoons such as SpongeBob SquarePants, Rugrats, Hey Arnold, The Angry Beavers, The Wild Thornberrys, Rocko's Modern Life, The Fairly Oddparents, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Doug, Invader Zim, Rocket Power, CatDog, The Ren & Stimpy Show, and much more when it launched. The first non-Nicktoons it aired were The Gnoufs, Mona the Vampire, Animal Crackers, Arthur, King, and more.

2004-2007

In October 2004 the channel rebranded Nicktoons TV to NickToons, dropping the "TV" part of the ident. The channel had its first mascots The Pixel characters, designed by Slomo Productions.[1]

2007-2010

Third NickToons logo used from 2007 to 2010.

From February 2007 to 30 April 2010, when the idents of Nicktoons were changed, there were 4 mascots;[2]

  • Rooftop – a 9-foot-high (2.7 m) moose, green in colour and with a rather dull disposition.
  • Beat – a trouble making mouse wearing a bobby's cap.
  • Colin – essentially a brain about one foot high with big eyes on skinny legs.
  • Spoon – a hyperactive childlike creature with buckteeth and always wearing a yellow helmet saying, "Spoon".

These idents were also used by The US version of Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2008.

This was designed by Studio AKA.

2010-present

On 30 April 2010, Nick Toons introduce the new logo aired in the US and the Netherlands as part of Nickelodeon's worldwide rebranding.

Nicktoonsters

On 18 August 2008, a new spin-off channel to Nicktoons was launched, called Nicktoonsters. The channel was only available on Sky. It broadcast some old Nicktoons shows such as Rugrats, The Wild Thornberrys, Hey Arnold!, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius, and Doug all of which were dropped from Nicktoons prior to launch. Its licence first appeared on the OFCOM website in September 2007 (initially named "Nick Toons 2", this was changed to Nicktoonsters on 3 July 2008).[3]

The channel closed on 31 July 2009 and was replaced with a 1 hour timeshift of Nicktoons, Nicktoons Replay on 1 August 2009.

Nicktoons Replay

On 17 June 2009, it was announced that a one hour timeshift of Nicktoons, called Nicktoons Replay would launch on 20 July 2009.[4] However the launch was delayed until 1 August 2009.[5]

The name and format is similar to its sister timeshifted channel, Nick Replay, which launched on 1 September 1999. However, unlike Nick Replay, Nicktoons Replay broadcasts for fewer hours than the main channel. The timeshift channel broadcasts from 07:00 to 19:00, meaning that programmes on NickToons which air before 06:00 or after 18:00 are not available on the timeshift channel. Nicktoons Replay timeshares a satellite slot with Comedy Central Extra +1 although both services are separate and have different channel numbers.

Toonz2Nite

In 2004, when Nicktoons TV extended their hours, the 19:00 – 22:00 slot was called 'Toonz2Nite' (extended further to 23:00 in November 2005). This had a separate, distinct presentation from the main channel, and the programmes shown were generally aimed at older viewers. The launch line-up consisted of The Fairly OddParents, The Angry Beavers, Invader Zim, The Ren & Stimpy Show, Aaahh!!! Real Monsters, Rocko's Modern Life. At various times, Yakkity Yak, Rocket Power, Hey Arnold!, SpongeBob SquarePants, As Told By Ginger, and Danny Phantom were also shown in this slot. The Toonz2Nite branding was dropped in early 2006, but the schedule kept going on.

Seriously Silly Sunday Mornings

Seriously Silly Sunday Mornings was a block that showed on Nickelodeon UK before summer in 2010 showing new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants, Fanboy and Chum Chum, Penguins of Madagascar and The Fairly OddParents. It stopped showing on Nickelodeon UK before the summer and never came back on Nick. In September 2010 there was an advert that said Seriously Silly Sunday Mornings is now on Nicktoons!. It showed on Nicktoons UK every Sunday from 10am-12pm. The Schedule was 10:00am: Fairly Odd Parents, 10:30am: Penguins of Madagascar, 11:00am: SpongeBob SquarePants and at 11:30am was Fanboy and Chum Chum. After Halloween 2010 there was no adverts about Seriously Silly Sunday Mornings and they did not show it anymore, but Nicktoons Still showed new episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants at 11:00am until December 2010 and Seriously Silly Sunday Mornings has not been heard about since.
