Nirnayam is a 1995 Malayalam–language crime thriller / drama film starring Mohanlal and Heera Rajgopal in lead roles. It is co-written and directed by Sangeeth Sivan. The film was an adaption of The Fugitive, which itself was based on The Fugitive TV series. The original film deals with the approval of a drug that could cause liver damages while in the remake, this was replaced by kidney scam. Nirnayam is the third Indian adaptation of The Fugitive. In the year 1994, Mahesh Bhatt made a Hindi and Telugu bilingual film Criminal on the lines of The Fugitive which was also well received by the Indian audience.

Plot

Dr. Roy (Mohanlal) is an honest surgeon who works in a private hospital. He falls in love with his colleague Dr. Annie (Heera Rajgopal). When Annie discovers a frightening organ-smuggling operation in her hospital, she is murdered. Dr. Roy is framed for the crime due to circumstantial evidence. However, on his way to jail, he escapes. A fugitive from justice, he tries to discover the truth. He eventually finds aid in a police officer, Javed (Lalu Alex). Eventually, Dr. Roy is able to bring the perpetrators behind the kidney scam to justice and kill Ifti, (Sharat Saxena), his wife's murderer.

Reception

The film was well received and the plot got high appreciation. However, statistics at the box-office claim the film to be just an above average grosser. R.Anand's music was critically acclaimed by modern music critics.

Soundtrack

The film score and soundtrack of the film were composed by the band Agosh, constituting of R. Anand, Gopal Rao and Shaleen.[2] However, the only credited musician is R. Anand. The lyrics were provided by Gireesh Puthenchery. The film had only 3 songs, out of which 2 were picturised ("Malar Maasam" and "Puliyanga Kolam") all sung by M. G. Sreekumar which became a chartbuster. In some VCD covers, S. P. Venkatesh is wrongly credited as music director. Anand and his associates were widely appreciated for exceptional compositions, out-of-the-box orchestraion, and topclass mixing and mastering; which made Nirnayam, a soundtrack equivalent to an epic A.R.Rahman soundtrack of that time. However, since the film was an average spinner, Anand's opportunity as a composer in Malayalam also became less. (Anand, is now a leading composer for national television commercials in Mumbai.)

  1. "Malar Masam" - M. G. Sreekumar - 4:59
  2. "Puliyanga Kolam" - M.G. Sreekumar - 4:31
  3. "En Mizhikkullil" (Only in Audio) - K. S. Chithra - 5:30
  4. "En Mizhikkullil" (Only in Audio) - M.G. Sreekumar - 5:30
