Proactive real-time voice quality management continuously and passively monitors the user voice experience without user knowledge, and conducts real-time problem resolution while calls are on-going without user interference.

Avaya Proactive Voice Quality Management (PVQM) in computer networking is a tool used to manage VoIP networks. Designed jointly by NetIQ and Nortel (now Avaya) , PVQM is a solution to provide real-time monitoring of VoIP deployments on Nortel Call Servers and PBXs. PVQM continuously and passively measures the user quality of experience (QoE) for all IP Telephony communications through the network with system health checks and provides troubleshooting and resolution of any performance degradation or fault management functions.[1]

The network probe is built into the Nortel IP Phone’s UNISTIM firmware and utilizes IETF Real-Time Control Protocol – Extended Reports (RTCP-XR) to provide information back to the server. The PVQM server is based on the NetIQ AppManager software package. NetIQ deployments typically rely on active nodes which reside on the data network and pass dummy data back to a server to assess factors such as jitter, latency and packet loss. The PVQM solution is unique in that it utilizes the IP telephones as nodes. Nortel parses the actual network traffic from the IP phones via RTCP-XR this allows PVQM to operate without the necessity of placing additional traffic on the network for analysis which is Nortel’s basis for claiming PVQM as a passive system. Data is still generated to the management server and the monitoring station, but in this case it is only the statistical data for displaying network performance. PVQM reports VoIP quality in R-Value (which is an objective value based on the measurement of packet loss, jitter, and latency) as well as Mean Opinion Score (MOS). The management platform will issue an alert when these values fall below a user defined threshold. The system can then be checked using the Proactive Voice Quality Fault Management to Handset, a remote diagnostic that traces the traffic route of the problem data and assists in pinpointing the trouble to the PBX, handset, or IP network.

Implementations

PVQM is available for a turnkey installation where all the network elements reside within the enterprise network as a customer owned and operated system. This allows an organization to integrate PVQM into existing management platforms such as Nortel’s ENMS to provide greater granularity to isolate trouble spots. This gives the IT staff the ability to diagnose network issues as they happen as opposed to after the fact.

Nortel also provides a managed service that is supported by one of their many Network Operations Centers as a way to eliminate capital outlay, but still give all the same reporting features to their customers.
