The North–South Expressway (Abbreviation: NSE; Chinese: 南北高速公路; pinyin: Nánbĕi Gāosù Gōnglù; Malay: Lebuhraya Utara-Selatan) is the 11th and newest of Singapore's network of expressways. The NSE will ease the growing traffic along the north-south corridor currently served by only the Central Expressway (CTE). The expressway was announced on 30 January 2008 as part of a major review of Singapore's transport network by the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The new 21 kilometres (13 mi) expressway would cost about S$7–8 billion when fully completed by 2020 and will connect the East Coast Parkway (ECP) with the northern parts of Singapore.^[1] On 19 Jan 2011, the government gave the green light to built the expressway between Admiralty Road West and Toa Payoh Rise. Advance works for NSE will start progressively from 2013 and major construction works will start in 2015. The new expressway will have a total of 16 in-ramps and 17 out-ramps to connect towns along the north-south corridor - Woodlands, Sembawang, Yishun, Ang Mo Kio, Bishan and Toa Payoh - with the city centre. NSE will also intersect and provide links to existing expressways, including the Seletar Expressway (SLE), Pan-Island Expressway (PIE)and East Coast Parkway (ECP), to improve the overall connectivity of the road network. On 15 November 2011, LTA unveiled the full alignment of the NSE.^[2]

Route

The route has been finalised as of 15 November 2011. It will be made up of a series of viaducts, once at-grade, few semi-tunnels and underground tunnels throughout of the expressway. Commencing from Admiralty Road West in northern Singapore and going southwards along Woodlands Ave 8, Gambas Ave, Sembawang Road. Then joining with Lentor Ave and intersect with the SLE. Semi tunnel between junction of Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 and 9. Entering the underground tunnel along Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6 and Marymount Road. Along the corridor of central Singapore, pass by Toa Payoh Rise. Joining Thomson Road and then Bukit Timah Road where it pass parallel of the CTE. Ending its journey along Ophir Road towards ECP, Republic Avenue and Nicoll Highway.
