Om (ಓಂ) is an Indian Kannada film directed by Upendra (ಉಪೇಂದ್ರ), starring Shivarajkumar (ಶಿವರಾಜ್ ಕುಮಾರ್), and notable for its exposure of Bangalore's criminal underworld. The film was a commercial and critical success and aided the careers of the actors Prema and Shivarajkumar. Since its first theatrical release in 1995, it continues to have a substantial following despite a lack of TV telecast or video release. , Kannada matinee idol Dr.Rajkumar considered this movie to be one of the closest to his heart. He has also sung two of the film's songs, O Gulabiye and Hey Dinakara.

Om was remade in Telugu as Omkaram (starring Dr.Rajshekar and Prema). Bollywood's 1998 blockbuster Satya shares many similarities with Om, including the fact that both deal with criminal underworlds and each protagonist's name is the same: Satya. Both these movies are considered to be cult classics in their respective languages.

The movie begins with a reporter writing articles about underworld dons and the reasons for why people enter the underworld and practice rowdyism.But,the movie revolves around the main character Satya(Shivarajkumar) a son of a priest turns into a rowdy for love.But the same love brings him back into being a civilized person. But the twists involved in the movie. As to why he is provoked to turn into a rowdy. How he is dejected by his family and relatives and also the girl for whom first time in his life he became violent are some of the key scenes to watch for in the movie.

Controversy

The movie is considered controversial because of its violence and the portrayal of a lot of Bangalore underworld's incidents. Many real underworld people acted in the movie, of which some convicts had to be bailed out just to act in this movie. Some of the infamous rowdies who acted in the film are Jedarahalli Krishnappa, Bekkina Kannu (Cat Eye) Raajendra, Korangu, and Tanveer. Before its release itself the film generated curiosity among film buffs not only in Karnataka but in the whole nation. The Week magazine came out with a cover page story about this film much before its release and expressed that this kind of film shouldn't have made by legendry Rajkumar's banner. moreover, the censor certification board refused to clear the film unless the climax is changed. Atlast the climax was changed and got released.
