Abkhazia is a de facto independent state[1][2][3][4][5][6] located in Eurasia whose de jure sovereignty is only recognized by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru and the disputed states of South Ossetia and Transnistria. The rest of the world's states consider Abkhazia to be de jure part of Georgia.[7] Abkhazia is located in the western Caucasus, on the eastern coast of the Black Sea. On the north, it borders the Russian Federation, on the east Georgia's Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.

Abkhazia was a part of Georgia in the Soviet Union until 1991, and when the Soviet Union collapsed, a conflict broke out over Abkhazia's status in relation to the newly independent Georgian state. The conflict led to the 1992-1993 war, which was won by Abkhazia with lagerly Russian support and resulted in the mass exodus and ethnic cleansing of the Georgian population from Abkhazia as well as Abkhazia's de facto independence. The parties signed a ceasefire accord in 1994 secured by UN monitors and a Russian-dominated CIS peacekeeping operation, but despite numerous talks Abkhazia and Georgia have not found a political solution to the conflict, which flared up violently several times throughout the years. Abkhazia remained unrecognised as an independent state until the August 2008 war over South Ossetia, following which Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela and Nauru recognised Abkhazia alongside South Ossetia.
