Ovation is an American television channel that airs programming dedicated to the arts and contemporary culture. It features programming devoted to performance, people, art, music and film. In addition, Ovation features in-depth profiles on various artists and performers, Arts news from the U.S and around the world and special programming aimed at children. Despite being considered an "arts channel", Ovation censors its content, most notably in films and documentaries.

History

Ovation launched as Ovation TV in April 1996. For several years, the channel had limited coverage and was only available through a select few television providers. On August 30, 2006, a group led by Sparkler Entertainment and Ovation CEO Charles Segars and Hubbard Media Group announced that it purchased the channel and intended to expand its carriage, while expanding the channel's programming without diluting the focus of the channel.[1]

Ovation TV relaunched on June 20, 2007 coinciding with its premiere on DirecTV, which gave the channel full national coverage for the first time in its 10-year history. In 2010, Ovation also became available on DISH Network.

With the relaunch, Ovation TV claimed an "energetic" new look and a new primetime schedule revolving around "genre nights" dedicated to performance, people, art, music and film.[2][dead link].

Ovation TV purchased International Music Feed from Universal Music Group and on January 8, 2008, replaced IMF with Ovation TV, boosting Ovation TV's distribution by 60% to 25 million homes.[3]

On March 1, 2010 the channel dropped the "TV" from its name in a rebranding effort. [4]

On August 5, 2010 Ovation appeared in the Comcast channel line up in the Jacksonville, FL and central New Jersey markets.

In October 2010 Ovation appeared in the Comcast channel line up in Southern New Hampshire.

In December 2010 Ovation and Ovation HD appeared in the Comcast channel line up in Central Pennsylvania.

In 2011 Ovation started airing Fox Network's dance competition television series So You Think You Can Dance.

Ovation HD

Ovation HD is a high definition simulcast of Ovation, which launched in July 2010. In a press release, the channel's Executive Vice President Ron Garfield said "Our decision to launch Ovation HD is a natural progression in the evolution of the network." He added, "Our affiliates always comment on how great our content would look in HD. They see it as great addition to their growing HD offerings."[5] It is currently available on Comcast, Bright House Networks, Service Electric and Time Warner Cable in select areas.
