George Washington University Virginia Campus

The George Washington University, a private not-for-profit institution, was chartered in Washington, D.C. in 1821, and is governed by a board of trustees.

The Campus was established in the Ashburn community of Loudoun County in 1991, with a gift of 50 acres from Robert H. Smith, then president of Charles E. Smith Construction and general partner of Washington engineering Associates.

The first building, a convert|71000|sqft|m2|sing=on academic building, was designed as a self-contained mini-campus and received “Pacesetter in Design Excellence” from the Loudoun County Economic Development Department Design Cabinet. The building was designed by Philip A. Esocoff, FAIA, then of Florance Eichbaum Esocoff King Architects.

Located at the University Center in Ashburn, the 95 acre Campus is strategically positioned in the Northern Virginia technology corridor near Dulles International Airport.

Campus Growth

Since 2001, the Virginia Campus has grown from one building to three and from 50 acres to 95 acres. In 2001, the university announced plans to build an convert|86000|sqft|m2|sing=on facility to house the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) Academy. The facility, which opened in September 2003, includes state of the art classrooms, laboratories, confereince facilities and a hangar-sized laboratory to allow for the storage and reconstruction of wreckage used for research and teaching. Designed by Esocoff & Associates Architects the NTSB facitlity won a 2004 Award of Merit from the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

In February 2002, the university purchased a convert|204000|sqft|m2|sing=on facility sitting on 40 acres adjacent to the Virginia Campus along Route 7. First phase building renovations converted open space into classrooms and faculty offices. Future renovations are planned to accommodate additional programs and administrative offices. The building houses university administrative offices, GW’s Information Systems and Services (ISS) staff and Data Center, the Virginia Campus Library, IJIS, The Jason Project, and select academic and research programs.

"Campus Population:" Approximately 400 staff and faculty and 550 graduate students enrolled in more than 3,200 credit hours.

The GW Virginia Campus offers graduate education in key focus areas of education and business leadership, information technology and telecommunications, engineering and transportation safety, and in the health sciences. A unique undergraduate degree in Pharmacogenomics is offered in partnership with The Shenandoah University Bernard J. Dunn School of Pharmacy.
