Plymouth College of Art

Plymouth College of Art - formerly called Plymouth College of Art and Design - is a specialist arts college located in Plymouth, England. It was founded as the Plymouth Drawing School in 1856,^[1], and remains one of a few specialist art colleges in the United Kingdom.^[2] The college provides vocational art and design education, specialising in the fields of art, design, crafts and media. Its full-time and part-time courses range from introductory to degree level, including Masters.^{[citation needed]}

The college caters for approximately 2,000 students, with around 1,300 studying on Further Education courses and over 600 on Higher Education courses.^{[citation needed]} Over 250 members of staff are employed by the college, which has an annual turnover of approximately £8 million. Students are enrolled from the local area, the wider south-west region, and further afield in the United Kingdom. The college also attracts international students.^{[citation needed]}

The college is a member of the National Art Learning Network; a Creative Arts Network which encourages collaboration between the country’s art colleges to increase the range of courses and progression opportunities for students.^{[citation needed]}

The college is administered by a Corporation.^[3]

In 2006, Plymouth College of Art and Design ended its membership of the University of Plymouth's Partner Colleges network, having completed its contractual obligations^[2]. Until 2007, Plymouth College of Art's degree courses were accredited by the University of Plymouth. Since 2008, the college's degree awards have been accredited by the Open University.^[4]

Plymouth College of Art and Design was re-named in December 2008, and became Plymouth College of Art^[5]

Students' Union

Plymouth College of Art has its own Student Union with a President, Vice President for HE, Vice President for FE, Finance Office, Mature Students Officer, Media & Entertainments Officer. Members marched through London to demonstrate against proposed increases in students' fees. The student union produces a magazine called 8ighteen 5ifty 6ix - the year the college was founded - and a website.^{[citation needed]}

Honorary Degrees

In 2009, the college awarded two honorary degrees which were conferred by The Open University. Artist Anthony Frost was awarded an honorary Master of The Open University and Raindance founder Elliot Grove was awarded an honorary Doctor of The Open University for their services to art and education and culture respectively.^{[citation needed]}
