Disuq

Disuq

Disuq ( _ar. دسوق) is a small city which is located 80 km south east of Alexandria. It belongs to Kafr ash Shaykh Governorate.

The muslim saint (Sidi) Ibrahim Quraish El-Dessouki (7th century), was based in this town hence his name. His tomb is located in the great mosque in the centre of Disuq. His descendants live in Alexandria and Cairo, and many live in the UK and US. "El-Dessouki" is the correct transliteration for the most accurate pronunciation, however the word is sometimes written as Disouki or Desouqi. Families with the name "Dessouki" (without "El-") are not related to the Saint, they are named after the city itself.

Disuq was the capital of Hyksos, the raiders who came to Egypt from Palestine in the Pharaohs era. It was called Puto. Ahmose fought on the Hyksos tribes. Then they were kicked out of Egypt.

Disuq lies on the Nile, where there are only two bridges to enter the city. Many important Egyptians hail from Disuq: Ahmed Zeweil, Mohammed Roshdy, Mohammed Safa'a Amir,Yaser Hassan El Kosair, Ahmed Ibrahim El-Nagar, Evelyn Ashamallah, and Abdel-Salam Mohammed Nasar, a famous politician in the city.
