Save-On-Foods is a chain of supermarkets located across the Western Canadian provinces of British Columbia and Alberta. It is a subsidiary of the Overwaitea Food Group, which, in turn, is owned by the Jim Pattison Group. Stores carry both standard brand names and private label brands, such as Western Family, Western Classics, Value Priced, and Body Zone. Many stores have pharmacies, and some locations provide other services, including nutrition tours, health clinics, photo labs and Changes Recycling Centres. Today, Save-On-Foods operates 50 stores in B.C. and 20 in Alberta.

A number of stores currently running as Save-On-Foods formerly operated under the Overwaitea brand until they were gradually converted during the expansion of the Save-On chain. Some of these brands are are Urban Fare, Cooper's Foods, PriceSmart Foods and Bulkley Valley Wholesale.

The first Save-On-Foods store was opened in Alberta in 1990, at Mayfield Common in Edmonton. The store's loyalty card, called the Save-On-More card, was launched in 1992. It is currently accepted at all of the chain's converted stores and at Chevron gas stations.

Save-On-Foods is also the namesake company of the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre Arena in Victoria, British Columbia.

In popular culture

* In Hong Kong comedy film, It's a MAD MAD World 2 (富貴迫人), Save-On Foods is the supermarket the family visits and buys the lottery tickets.

* During the 1980s in Burnaby, B.C., the store earned the unflattering nickname "Cave-In Foods" when the rooftop parking lot of a new flagship store at Metrotown/Station Square shopping centre caved into the market area on opening day. The incident sparked a popular joke in the area: "What's the difference between most grocery stores and Save-On Foods? Most stores bring your groceries to your car; Save-On brings your car to your groceries."

* During an inquest to determine what happened, a representative of Tamm Tacy and Associates, the engineering firm that designed the store, advised the commission, "There appears to have been an error in calculation or in reading from the table for that specific [key roof] beam." Two independent engineering reports confirmed the undersized beam was the cause for the collapse.
