Tysvær is a municipality in the county of Rogaland, Norway.

Tysvær was separated from Skjold in 1849. The municipality of Nedstrand, and some parts of Skjold, Avaldsnes, Vikedal and Vats, were merged with Tysvær January 1, 1965.

The municipality is located at the northern side of Boknafjord, east of Karmøy.

The Norwegian emigration to USA was initiated by the local Cleng Peerson. Also, the painter Lars Hertervig was born in Tysvær.

Tysvær has a population of 9,349 (2006) and an area of 419 km².

Local administration is located at Aksdal. Tysvær has a number of scenic walks including Heggelifjellet and Kvinnesland, the source of the name Kvindesland.

Aksdalsvatnet is a lake in this municipality.

The name

The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Tysvær (Norse "Teitsfjörðr"), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the old male name "Teitr", the last element is "fjörðr" m 'fjord'.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1984). It shows a heron.
