The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old farm Rindal (Norse "Rinnudalr"), since the first church was built there. The first element is the genitive case of the rivername "Rinna", the last element is "dalr" m 'valley, dale'. The rivername is derived from the verb "rinna" 'run, flow'.
Until 1918 the name was written "Rindalen".
