Tydal is a municipality in the county of Sør-Trøndelag, Norway. Tydal was separated from Selbu January 1, 1901.

Coat-of-arms

The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1997). It shows three Anthony's crosses, to represent a power line and the letter T.

Geography

Tydal consists of 1330 km² and is the largest community in the province of Sør-Trøndelag. The rivers Tya Nidelva, which ends in the Trondheimfjord, pass through Tydal.

Tydal is situated at 260 meter above sea level, and the highest mountain top is 1762 meters high. Tydal is halfway between Røros and Trondheim, with provincial route 705 as most important road. Værnes airport, close to Trondheim, is one hour of driving away. There are daily busconnections to Trondheim, Værnes as well as Røros. The centre of Tydal is the village Ås. Other villages are Græsli, Aune and Stugudal.

Demography

The 900 inhabitants earn a living in farming, forestry, energy production and in tourism. In 2004, 25 persons left and 31 persons established in Tydal. Tydal has a school and a kindergarten.

During Easter the number of people in Tydal increase up to 5,000. Many people from Trondheim celebrate their holidays in the 1,400 cabins in the community of Tydal.
