Amitayus

Amitayus

Buddha Amitāyus is the Buddha of long life, good fortune and wisdom.

Amitāyus is an alternative name for the Buddha Amitābha. While in the Larger Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra the name Amitāyus is seldom used, this name is always used in the Smaller Sukhāvatīvyūha Sūtra. [SHUMANN, Hans Wolfgang, "Immagini Buddiste, manuale iconografico" ["Buddistishe Bilderwelt", 1986] , translated by Stefania Bonarelli, Roma, Edizioni Mediterranee, 1986, p. 90.]

Buddha Amitayus is practised extensively in Tibetan Buddhism and New Kadampa Tradition.

His short mantra is given as OM AMARANI ZEWÄNTEYE SÖHA or OM AMARANI JIWANTIYE SWAHA.

Iconography

Although Amitābha and Amitāyus are the same transcendent Buddha, Amitābha is traditionally depicted holding the begging bowl, "pātra", while Amitāyus holds the vase of immortality, "kalasa". On scroll paintings Amitāyus' head is in a darker tone of red than the body. In their "sambhogakaya" form, both Amitābha and Amitāyus wear the thirteen jewels of the transcendent Buddhas.
