Thái Nguyên audio|Thai Nguyen.ogg|pronunciation is a city and municipality in Vietnam. It is the capital of the Thái Nguyên Province, in northeastern Vietnam.

History

Beginning as a small township including four residential quarters, two towns, and six communes with a combined population of approximately 140,000, Thai Nguyen became a city of Thai Nguyen province on October 19, 1962. Before that date, the area was a part of Dong Mo Commune, Dong Hy District.

Thai Nguyen township was formerly a center of the northernmost Vietnam base, called Viet Bac during the period of its existence (1956-1975). Thai Nguyen City is also the township of Thai Nguyen Province. When Bac Thai Province was established (1965-1996), Thai Nguyen was a city as a township of Bac Thai Province. On November 6, 1996, Thai Nguyen Province was restored and Thai Nguyen became a city town of Thai Nguyen Province, Vietnam, as it had been before.

Location, area, and population

Thai Nguyen City is located on a bank of the Cau River. Its area approximately 17,707.52 ha. Its population was 228,064 in 2005.

Commerce and tourism

Thai Nguyen city is the center of heavy industries of northern Vietnam. Thai Nguyen Iron and Steel Company (TISCO), which is located in Thai Nguyen city, is one of Vietnam's top 20 state-owned companies, and has made a sizable contribution to Vietnam's economy (2007). Thai Nguyen city is also the gateway to northwest Vietnam.

Northwest Vietnam was formerly Vietnam's northernmost military base. Currently, attracts many tourists, both from Vietnam as well as from overseas. Thai Nguyen has a famous landscape called Nui Coc lake with a legend of moving story scence. People in Thai Nguyen mainly work for TISCO and others work in the tourism industry.
