I'm Livin' in Shame

"I'm Livin' In Shame" is a 1969 song recorded and released by popular singing group The Supremes on the Motown label. It's most prominent as the sequel to the Supremes' number-one hit, "Love Child".

ong information

After the release of the popular "Love Child", Motown team, the Clan, produced a sequel, "I'm Livin' In Shame," which explores the same woman's quest to shun both her impoverished childhood and her mother, and pass herself off to her friends and new husband as the daughter of a rich family. The woman's mother ends up dying without ever seeing her daughter as an adult, or ever meeting her two-year-old grandson. "I'm Livin' In Shame," recorded by Ross and the Andantes without Wilson or Birdsong as was the case with "Love Child", was inspired by the melodramatic 1959 Lana Turner film Imitation of Life (the pre-chorus of "Mama, mama, mama can you hear me?" is actual dialogue from the film).

Charts

The song was included on the 1969 Let the Sunshine In album and made it to the number-ten spot on the pop charts in the winter of 1969.
