The Pardus Linux distribution is an operating system developed in Turkey, as a product of the Pardus Project. It was named after the Latin (and scientific) name for the Anatolian Leopard.

Developers

Pardus was started and is developed by Turkish National Research Institute of Electronics and Cryptology (UEKAE), which is under the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK).

Releases and packages

The first version, Pardus 1.0, was released on 2005-12-26. The Pardus Live CD was the first product of the Pardus Project.

Pardus 2007.3 included the Linux 2.6.18 kernel, the OpenOffice.org office suite, Internet tools (browser, e-mail, instant messaging, etc.), multimedia and graphics tools (video player, music player, etc.), games, and many other applications. [http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/projeler COMAR] is the configuration manager developed inhouse, and Tasma is the custom KDE and system configuration tool.

The latest stable version (Pardus 2008) of the [http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/products Kurulan Install CD] includes the Linux 2.6.25.9 kernel, the OpenOffice.org office suite, Internet tools (browser, e-mail, instant messaging, etc.), multimedia and graphics tools (video player, music player, etc.), games, and many other applications. [http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/projeler COMAR] is the configuration manager developed inhouse, and Tasma is the custom KDE and system configuration tool. KDE has been updated to 3.5.9, other important infrastructure improvements: Python 2.5, Java 6, Mozilla Firefox 3.0, OpenOffice.org 2.4.1.

PiSi package management

[http://www.pardus.org.tr/eng/projects/pisi/PiSi.html PiSi] (Packages Installed Successfully as Intended, IPAEng|ˈpiːsiː) is the package management system of Pardus. It is the primary tool for installing, upgrading and removing software packages. PiSi stores and handles the dependencies for the various packages, libraries, and COMAR tasks. "Pisi" is a Turkish word meaning "kitty", intended as a pun on the distribution's name.

Pardus 2008

Pardus 2008 has been released on Friday 27th June 2008. It is available from the Pardus project homepage. Swedish is added with 2008.1, currently Pardus is available at 11 languages.

Reception

Ladislav Bodnar, the creator of DistroWatch, wrote in his round-up of Linux/*nix in 2006 that Pardus is one of the distros he was most impressed by that year "...thanks to unique package management ideas, innovative start-up sequence and general desktop polish..."
