Sergei Gurenko (Belarusian: "Сяргей Гурэнка", Russian "Сергей Гуренко"; born September 30, 1972 in Hrodna) is a Belarusian football player, Lokomotiv Moscow defender and the Belarusian national team captain.

Career

Clubs

Sergei Gurenko began his professional career in his local Belarusian club Chimik Hrodna in the 1989 season. From 1990 he was a the regular starter for the team, playing more than 30 games per season.

In 1992 he was signed by Belarusian Premier League club Nioman Hrodna. He established himself at the highest level very soon, playing more than 25 fixtures per year every season for his new team.

In 1995 he was transferred to Russian Premier League side Lokomotiv Moscow. His outstanding skills and determination lead him to become one of the leaders of his side, and eventually he left his team for further challenge.

In 1999 he became a player of Italian Serie A side A.S. Roma, but couldn't establish himself well there, playing in only 7 games for his club.

In the 2000-01 season he played for Spanish La Liga side Real Zaragoza, but didn't do well there too, participating in just 11 games.

In the 2001-02 season he returned to Italy, playing for Parma AC, making 11 appearances that season.

The following season he was a regular part of the first team of Serie A side Piacenza, participating in 25 fixtures and scoring one goal.

In 2003 he returned to Lokomotiv. He is currently a regular for his club.

National team

Sergei Gurenko debuted for the Belarus national football team on May 5, 1994, in a friendly against Ukraine and would eventually become the team captain. He ended his national team duty after a row with the manager during preparation to the WC qualifier against Moldova on September 3, 2005.

He is the most capped Belarusian player with 78 caps.

Achievements

On 22 July, 2006, Gurenko passed milestone of 500 competitive games on the highest level, and became a member of elite club of Sergei Aleinikov. [cite news
