Reception

The film was met with mostly good reviews form the people who hate her everyone, [ [http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1800360582/critic Loser (2000) - Critics Reviews - Yahoo! Movies ] ] with Roger Ebert giving the film only two stars. [ [http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20000721/REVIEWS/7210302/1023 :: rogerebert.com :: Reviews :: Loser (xhtml) ] ] It scored 4.3/10 at Rotten Tomatoes, with a rotten rating of only 25%. However, online film critic James Berardinelli gave the film 3.0/4.0 stars. Stating that film was one of the "pleasant surprises" of the 2000 film season. The film generated a total of $15.6 million in the US. It failed further when released worldwide, grossing a total of just $2.7 million. The film was therefore unable to break even on its production costs, let alone make a profit. Additionally, because film makers only receive half of the box office gross, the film would have fallen short by at least $10 million. Cameos

"Loser" contains several cameos, the most notable of which is David Spade's cameo as a video store clerk who advises Paul on which film to rent, as well as a cameo by stand-up comedian Steven Wright as the "bar dude". At the start of the movie, Dan Aykroyd makes an appearance as Paul's father. Andy Dick also has a small role as the "office clerk". Rock band Everclear also make an appearance when Paul buys tickets to go to their concert in an effort to befriend Dora. Several other smaller cameos include Colleen Camp as a homeless woman who helps Dora at the beginning of the film and Alan Cumming at the Cabaret scene (the male lead).

Trivia

*The name Dora Diamond is an allusion to Dora Diamant
* Christina Ricci turned down the role of Dora Diamond. She would later appear as Jason Biggs's love interest in two other movies: "Anything Else" and "Prozac Nation".
*In the Kevin Smith film "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", Jason Biggs (playing himself) angrily questions why people solely know him from the "American Pie" movies, at one point stating, "They never come up to me and say 'Hey, you were in "Loser"!"
*While set in New York, much of the film was shot at and around the University of Toronto.
