Gusev

Gusev

Gusev ( _ru. Гу́сев; _de. Gumbinnen; _lt. Gumbinė; _pl. Głąbin/Gąbin) is a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia. It is situated close to the border with Lithuania, east of Chernyakhovsk. Population: 28,467 (2002 Census).

As Gumbinnen, the town was the capital of Regierungsbezirk Gumbinnen in the Prussian Province of East Prussia. Gumbinnen became part of the German Empire during the unification of Germany in 1871. The Battle of Gumbinnen, a major battle on the Eastern Front of World War I, took place nearby in August 1914.

During the Nazi era, Gumbinnen was a military sub-region of the Königsberg military area, and was the headquarters of the 206th Depot-Abteilung.

On 21 January 1945, Gumbinnen was captured by the Red Army. The following year, on 7 September 1946, it was renamed Gusev, after the Soviet Captain, Sergei Ivanovich Gusev, born in 1918, killed in action in the battle for the town in January 1945, who was posthumously given the title Hero of the Soviet Union on 19 April 1945.
