Rum Punch

:"For the alcoholic mixed drink, see Punch (drink)"

"Rum Punch" is a 1992 novel written by Elmore Leonard, adapted into a film by director Quentin Tarantino, who changed some of the characters and the plot. The film was released in 1997 as "Jackie Brown".

Plot summary

Set in West Palm Beach and Miami, FL, "Rum Punch" follows Jackie Burke, a 44-year-old airline stewardess, who has been bringing cash into the country for a gunrunner named Ordell Robbie (whose nickname, Whitebread, comes from the fact that he's light-skinned). When the cops try to use Jackie to get at Ordell, she hatches a plan--with help from bail bondsman Max Cherry--to keep the money for herself.

Trivia

* In the book, the character Jackie is actually a white woman. However, in Quentin Tarantino's film, "Jackie Brown," the character is changed to an African American woman, and is portrayed by legendary blaxploitation star Pam Grier.

* Unlike the book, the film takes place in California, primarily Carson and Torrance. and the film is a tribute to the old blaxploitation films of the 60's and 70's, starring Samuel L. Jackson, Robert De Niro, Bridget Fonda, Micheal Keaton, and Robert Forester, with appearances by Chris Tucker, and Sid Haig.
