Hoc (Beowulf)

Hoc (Beowulf)

Hoc is mentioned as the father of Hnæf (d. 450?) and Hildeburh in the Old English poems "Beowulf" and the "Finnsburg Fragment". Widsith says that Hnæf ruled over the Hocings, i.e. Hoc's people. Hoc is called "Hoc Healfdene", suggesting a mixed ethnicity (part Dane). He may be identical to the chieftain "Haki" mentioned in the Ynglinga Saga by Snorri Sturlason. This Haki conquered the kingdom of Uppsala and reigned there for ten years before he was cast out by king Jorund. This happened at approximately the same time (early fifth century).

Hoc is not mentioned in any other stories.
