Bernhard Wicki

Bernhard Wicki (28 October 1919 in St. Pölten, Austria - 5 January 2000 in Munich) was an Austrian actor and film director.

Life and Work

Bernhard Wicki fought in the Army against France in WW2Fact|date=September 2008, and his experiences affected both him and his films. As of 2000 there is a Bernhard-Wicki-Filmpreis which awards 15,000 euros to upcoming Austrian filmmakers.

He is famous for his anti-war film "Die Brücke" ("The Bridge"), in which seven boys, blinded by the propaganda of the National Socialist German Workers Party, defend their home town's strategically unimportant bridge from approaching forces of the United States Army during World War II.

Probably his internationally most famous work is his directing of the German scenes in The Longest Day.
