Kelvinside

Kelvinside

Kelvinside is a district in the Scottish city of Glasgow. It is situated north of the River Clyde and is bounded by Great Western Road to the South with Kelvindale and the River Kelvin itself to its North. It is known as one of the most affluent areas of Glasgow, with many large villas, similar to those found in Pollokshields in the South Side. It encompasses other smaller areas such as Cleveden and Kirklee.

As with Morningside, Edinburgh, residents are sometimes said to have a "pan loaf" accent, i.e. an affected one. This often leads to jokes about a "Kelvinsaide" accent. Both of these areas were featured in an advert for ScotRail [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKYTtKe_mGM Glasgow Vs Edinburgh - ScotRail TV commercial]

Kelvinside railway station was on the Lanarkshire and Dunbartonshire Railway, but is now closed. Parts of this line can still be seen in the botanic gardens, fenced off it can be viewed from above and the tunnels are still open. Often in the winter smoke can be seen rising from the mouth of the tunnel as it is frequented by the homeless who access it at an opening in the Yorkhill end of the tunnel some miles away.

Kelvinside is home to private school Kelvinside Academy "KA" which is situated on the corner of Kirklee Rd and Bellshaugh Rd.

At the corner of Kirklee and Gt. Western Rd is a shop called Churhill’s, sadly this shop went out of business recently. Churchill’s began life as a green hut just a little bigger than an average sized garage. It was known by all the residents and school pupils of KA alike as "The Greenie", once the new building was built it was a two storey building with a flat in the second story and a shop on the bottom. Although clad with teak stained wood, it was still loving referred to as the Greenie.
