- London Gliding Club
The London Gliding Club was formed shortly after the formation of the
British Gliding Association onFebruary 20 1930 . When the club started usingIvinghoe Beacon as a launch site for itsgliders , the spectacle attracted so much public attention that the club was evicted for "spoiling its peaceful enjoyment by the public". The club then moved to its current home at the foot of theDunstable and Whipsnade Downs , technically within the parish boundaries ofTotternhoe . It is one of the largestgliding clubs in theUnited Kingdom . A member loaned his high-performance two-seatBlanik sailplane to theJoseph E. Levine Presents film company for the shooting of interior (cockpit) scenes representingDakota s towing aloftHorsa gliders for the movieA Bridge Too Far (film) , in 1976. Ten Horsa replicas were constructed, but they were not airworthy. [Hurst, Flt. Lt.
