- Aamjiwnaang First Nation
The Aamjiwnaang First Nation (also referred to in government sources as Sarnia Indian Reserve 45 or Chippewas of Sarnia First Nation) is a
First Nations community of about 850 Chippewa (Ojibwe) Aboriginal peoples, located in a reserve on the shores of theSt. Clair River nearSarnia, Ontario in southwesternOntario ,Canada – just across the US border fromPort Huron, Michigan [" [http://deseretnews.com/dn/print/1,1442,635169635,00.html Natives see son shortage in 'Chemical Valley'] , "Deseret Morning News", December 18, 2005"] .The name "Aamjiwnaang", or more fully vocalised as "Aamijiwanaang", means "at the spawning stream."
The Aamjiwnaang community has expressed concern regarding its proximity to
chemical plant s in the area, asbirth rates of their people have been documented by the American journalEnvironmental Health Perspectives [" [http://www.ehponline.org/docs/2005/8479/abstract.html Environmental Health Perspectives study documenting skewed sex ratio] "] as deviating from the normal ratio of close to 50%boys , 50%girls . The ratio as found between 1999 and 2003 by the journal was roughly 33% boys, and 67% girls [" [http://www.cbc.ca/story/science/national/2005/09/02/no_boys20050902.html Aamjiwnaang First Nations concerned about chemical exposure] ", "CBC News", September 02, 2005 ] . The First Nation is concerned that this abnormal trend is due to exposure to theeffluent andemissions of the nearby chemical plants.
