- Francis Lynde Stetson
Francis Lynde Stetson (
April 23 ,1846 –December 5 ,1920 ) was an Americanlawyer .He was born at
Keeseville, New York , the son of Lemuel Stetson who served in the New York state assembly and as a representative in the 28thU. S. Congress . He graduated fromWilliams College in 1867 and fromColumbia Law School in 1869. He was admitted to the bar in 1869 and practiced inNew York City . He devoted attention chiefly to corporation and railway law, becoming eminent in those lines. He became general counsel of the International Mercantile Marine Company, theNorthern Pacific Railway , the Southern Railway, and theUnited States Rubber Company ; also director in several railway companies and other corporations. In 1894, he formed the firm of Stetson, Jennings & Russell, which representedJ. P. Morgan 'sUnited States Steel Corporation ; he was also Morgan's personal attorney. PresidentGrover Cleveland was a partner in the firm between his two terms as President, and a close friend. Stetson also served as counsel forSamuel J. Tilden in thecontroversy over the 1876 presidential election. He was president of the New York State Bar, 1910-1911.He established an estate in
Ringwood, New Jersey from farm in theRamapo Mountains that would become the New Jersey State Botanical Gardens inRingwood State Park .Williams College offers a
