Dilema veche ("The Old Dilemma"), formerly Dilema, is a Romanian weekly journal of culture, criticism and opinion.

History

It was founded as Dilema in 1993 by art critic Andrei Pleşu and up until the end of 2003 it was edited by an independent cultural body, Fundaţia Culturală Română. On January 1, 2004, that foundation became the Romanian Cultural Institute, placed under the patronage of the Romanian Presidency and Government. In an effort to maintain a critical position and its independence, the entire editorial team quit the institute and founded a new publication, Dilema Veche, with the financial support of some of its columnists and of the poet and publicist Mircea Dinescu. Dilema Veche is now member of Adevărul Holding, a major Romanian press trust owned by businessman Dinu Patriciu. Dilema Veche is also a member of the Eurozine network.
