Georgetown University School of Foreign Service in Qatar, also known as SFS-Qatar, is an accredited university operated by the Georgetown University Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in Doha, Qatar. The school was planned in 2002 and opened in 2005. It is part of the larger Education City development which houses five other American university satellite campuses. The school accepts around forty students each year, and as of 2008 has a total of about 140 students.

History

In 2005 the SFS joined four other U.S. universities in opening a campus in Education City. All costs for the development of this campus are paid for by the non-profit Qatar Foundation. The requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Foreign Service degree are the same as those of the Washington campus. Classes started in August 2005 with 25 students. By August 2007, the student body grew to 110 students, and by 2008 to 140.

Georgetown University began studying the feasibility of opening a campus of the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in Qatar in October 2002, when the Qatar Foundation, which is funding the entire enterprise, first proposed the idea. In consultation with government officials, Washington-based embassies from nations of the region, academic institutions in the region, business leaders, Catholic and Jesuit leaders, and other officials, Georgetown evaluated this opportunity to ensure that it built appropriately on its international presence and academic excellence and is consistent with the Catholic-Jesuit identity of the University.

Academics

Currently, students at SFS-Qatar major in International Politics, with the option to earn a certificate American Studies. Other majors are to be introduced in the coming years. The International Politics major consists of a "core curriculum" coupled with major courses. During the first two years of classes, students focus on the "core curriculum" consisting of courses in history, theology, philosophy, and economics. During the last 2 years of classes, students take "major classes" that focus on topics such as International Law, Human Rights, International Security, etc.

Students also have the opportunity to obtain a certificate in American Studies by taking a variety of classes focused on American history, culture, and government. The school is also associated with the Center for International and Regional Studies.

For the Class of 2012, SFS-Qatar accepted 41 students out of the 2,813 total early and regular applicants, hitting a Middle Eastern University record-low acceptance rate at 1.17%.Fact|date=October 2008

There are thirty-two faculty dedicated to Georgetown University, though because of sharing arrangements with other Universities at Education City, over one-hundred faculty teach at the school. Campus

The school shares the Education City facilities, including the Liberal Arts and Science (LAS) Building and dormitories. A new convert|40000|sqft|m2|adj=on building is currently being designed to house the SFS-Qatar program exclusively. The facility is being designed by renowned architect Ricardo Legorreta of Mexico City. Student activities include Georgetown University Student Association-Qatar (GUSA-Q, the student government), the Campus Activities Council, the South Asian Society, the Photography and Media Club, and the Hoya English Language Program. The "DoHoya" is the school newspaper, and is not related to "The Hoya" of the main campus. The Doha Lecture Fund has brought regional leaders to speak at the campus, including President of Israel Shimon Peres. The Hoya Hope Club was founded by Fay Ahmed Ghanim Al-Romaihi in 2008 as the school's only community service organization. Clubs sports include cricket, football (soccer), and women's basketball.
