Wells Fargo Center (Denver)

Wells Fargo Center is a building located in Denver, Colorado, United States. The building features a cash register or mailbox type of architecture and as such is known to locals as the "Cash Register Building" and sometimes as the "Mailbox Building." This building is 698 feet (213 meters) in height but contrary to popular belief, is not the tallest building in Denver. It comes in third place in that category behind the Republic Plaza building 714 feet (217.6 meters) in height and the Qwest Communications headquarters building (1801 California Street), 709 feet (216 meters) in height. The building sits on a hill, making its overall elevation higher than the two aforememntioned buildings, but its ground to roof height is less. The building is 52 stories tall.

Designed by renowned architect Philip Johnson and completed in 1983, it is the most recognizable building in downtown Denver. As it was originally designed for a downtown area in Texas, a heated roof is necessary to prevent snow from dangerously sliding off the distinguished curved crown. Located at 1700 Lincoln St, a skybridge over Lincoln Street connects the Wells Fargo Center to the building at 1700 Broadway which houses among other things, a food court, a small museum featuring artifacts and memorabilia from Wells Fargo history, and the Downtown Denver branch of Wells Fargo Bank. Both buildings have large atriums constructed in the same cash register style.
