Military of Japan

The military forces of Japan have had a number of different names over time. Prior to 1945, there were two separate services under the command of the Imperial General Headquarters:

* Imperial Japanese Army
* Imperial Japanese Navy

These were both dissolved after World War II, and replaced after 1954 by the Japan Self-Defense Forces. These forces comprise:

* Japan Ground Self-Defense Force
* Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force
* Japan Air Self-Defense Force
