Breiðablik (known as UBK Kopavogur when playing in European competitions) was founded in 1950 and is the biggest sports club in Kópavogur in Iceland. It has several divisions, both men and women: football, athletics, basketball, karate, dance, skiing, swimming and team handball.

Name

The name Breiðablik comes from norse mythology where it was the home of Baldur. The nickname "Blikar,Blix" is formed from the second part of that name, meaning splendors or twinkles (like a star). The singular form "Bliki" is also a name for male ducks.

Football - men's team

The men football team is notorious for bouncing between the two top leagues, getting promoted and relegated regularly. It won promotion to the Úrvalsdeild yet again in 2005. Breiðablik although saved themselves from relegation in 2006, finishing in 5th place. Before the tournament they were told most likely to get relegated from the top division in Iceland along with ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar, but they proved them all wrong in the final rounds and found themselves ahead of ÍA Akranes, Fylkir, Grindavík and ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar.
