The National Institute of Technology, Durgapur (NIT Durgapur), formerly the Regional Engineering College (REC), Durgapur, was established under an Act of the Parliament of India in 1960 as one of the eight RECs. It is a fully funded technological institution of the government of India and is administered by an autonomous Board of Governors.

In 2010, NIT-Durgapur celebrated its Golden Jubilee (completing 50 years). The institute is one of the 14 RECs established between 1959 and 1965. In August 2007 NIT Durgapur was declared an Institute of National Importance under the NIT Act (before 2005 it was controlled by Burdwan University), thus enabling it and other NITs to become centres of excellence like IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology).

It is the first institute in Eastern India to be selected as a Lead Institute under the Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme of the government of India funded by the World Bank. The students and faculty conduct research and collaborate with international and national universities, research centers and laboratories. Research in the institute is sponsored by government agencies including the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

Professors, scientific officers and students of this institute publish hundreds of papers in journals of international repute like IEEE, Elsevier, Springer-Verlag, Taylor-Francis, etc.

The institute has a High-Voltage Laboratory which is only the sixth of its kind in the world, and the first in India. The computer science department has a CISCO lab in collaboration with CISCO. NIT Durgpaur's annual techno-management festival, Aarohan is the second biggest festival in all of eastern India. It's youth-cum-literary festival "Verve" is also very popular amongst the masses across many colleges in India.

In February 17-20, 2011, the Civil Engineering department of the Institute (in association with Lund University, Sweden) organized an international conference on Water Resources & Adaptation to climate changes. In November 2010, the Chemical Engineering department organised another international conference on Computation, Modelling and Optimization.

Admissions

Admissions to undergraduate courses are competitive, through the All India Engineering Entrance Exam (AIEEE). There are a few seats for NRI(Non resident Indian) and DASA students. Admission to Post graduate programs like M.Tech requires competitive scores in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering and Common Admission Test (CAT) for MBA and National Institute of Technology MCA Common Entrance Test (NIMCET) for MCA.

NIT Durgapur follows the reservation policy declared by the Supreme Court of India, by which 27% of seats are reserved for Other Backward Classes (OBCs), 15% for Scheduled Castes (SCs), and 7.5% for Scheduled Tribes (STs).
