Regional profile

Midwestern Ontario is primarily a conservative area, although there are pockets of liberalism where the Liberals are stronger, particularly in the urban areas. Vote splitting allowed the Liberals to win all of the seats here from 1993 to 2000 in their Ontario sweeps, although one seat was lost to the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada (now replaced by the Conservative Party) in a 2003 by-election. Four more seats were picked up in the 2004 election, and another in the 2006 election. The Liberals are much stronger in the cities, namely Brantford, Guelph, and the Kitchener-Waterloo area. Huron-Bruce is an oddity in which a locally popular right-wing Liberal holds the Conservatives at bay in a fairly conservative area. The New Democratic Party is fairly weak here and rarely is expected to contend for any seats.
