History

Washington High School was constructed in 1992 adjacent to Paul Brown Tiger Stadium , replacing the original school built in 1912 located one mile west in downtown Massillon.

Academics

Washington High School provides programs including college readiness and vocational technical careers.

Football

Football came to Massillon in 1894 with the first high school game was played in Massillon between Massillon High School and Canton Central High School. In the early years, the players consisted of working boys because most boys did not attend high school. By 1904 more boys began attending school past 8th grade. 1909 was Massillon’s first undefeated football team. From 1910-1920 high school football in Massillon grew and improved, and by 1916 they were named the Scholastic Champions of Ohio. [2]

Washington High School is nationally famous for its high school football, which was featured in the 2001 film Go Tigers!. The team has compiled a record of 802 wins, 242 losses, and 35 ties, through week 8 of the 2010 season. The Tigers play their home games at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium (seating capacity: 18,000; artificial turf); a live tiger cub named "Obie" is on the sidelines for each home game. The team's name was adopted in 1924, and was named after a professional team known as the Massillon Tigers, one of the top teams in professional football in the early 1900s. So strong is the tradition and history, that baby boys at Massillon's hospital are given a miniature football at birth. Massillon's arch rival is Canton McKinley High School. Their meeting is the final game of the regular season each year. It is the only high school contest in America to feature odds in Las Vegas.[3] In 119 meetings (1894–2009), Massillon leads the series 64-50-5. A total of 23 professional players, 3 NFL coaches and 14 collegiate all-Americans have graduated from Massillon High School.[citation needed]

In the summer of 2008, due to the success of the Tigers' athletic programs, ESPN nominated Massillon, Ohio as a candidate for Titletown USA.[4]

Titles

Prior to the implementation of the playoff system in 1972, Washington High School was awarded the Ohio State Championship title 22 times. Most recently in 2005 they were runner up to Cincinnati St. Xavier in a 24-17 loss in the state championship game. They have also been recognized as the AP National Champions nine times – in 1935, 1936, 1939, 1940, 1950, 1952, 1953, 1959, 1961 – the most in the nation.
