Center for Immigration Studies

The Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) is a non-profit, non-partisan research organization. Its executive director is Mark Krikorian. Its mission statement states:

It is the Center's mission to expand the base of public knowledge and understanding of the need for an immigration policy that gives first concern to the broad national interest. The Center is animated by a pro-immigrant, low-immigration vision which seeks fewer immigrants but a warmer welcome for those admitted. The CIS publishes books, reports, and papers on immigration policy. These analyses address issues such as immigrant voting and electoral redistricting, impacts on low-wage and high-skilled workers, terrorism concerns, and the environmental consequences of immigration.

The CIS was founded and funded by John Tanton in 1985 as an offshoot of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR). Research and reports are available free to the public at the Center's website.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has described the founder of CIS and many groups associated with it as linked to openly racist organizations.

CIS is one of several anti-immigration groups exposed in a Wall Street Journal article [(“Borderline Republicans” June 14, 2004)] , “In fact, CIS, FAIR, NumbersUSA, Project-USA and more than a half-dozen similar groups that Republicans have become disturbingly comfy with, were founded or funded (or both) by John Tanton, a retired doctor in Michigan. In addition to trying to stop immigration to the U.S., appropriate population-control measures for Dr. Tanton and his network include promoting China’s one-child policy, sterilizing Third World women and wider use of RU-486.”
