Stow-Munroe Falls High School is a high school located in Stow, Ohio, USA, a suburb of Akron, Ohio. It contains just under 2,000 students and is one of the largest high schools in northeast Ohio. Their school mascot is the bulldog.

Notable Alumni

* Haley Bennett - singer, songwriter, and actress (attended, but did not graduate from SMFHS)

* Larry Csonka - NFL Hall-of-Famer, played college football at Syracuse University. Was running back for the undefeated Miami Dolphins in 1972. He also served as a commentator on the television program, American Gladiators.

* Lee Gissendaner - Former running back for Northwestern University and played 2 partial seasons with the Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings. Currently works as an NFL scout for the Green Bay Packers.

* Dave Jamerson - Former first-round draft pick of the Houston Rockets out of Ohio University. His #33 was retired in January 2007 at Ohio University.

Activities

Bands

Stow-Munroe Falls has a sizable band program, including the Wind Ensemble, the Symphonic Bands (Maroon and Gold), and the Freshman concert band. The bands also form a single marching band that performs at contests and football games during the fall season. The percussion section auditions for marching band instruments near the end of May every year. These auditions will place them in one of four sections: pit percussion/cymbals, bass drum, snare, or quads. They remain in their position from the audition time until the end of the football season. Other instruments assign parts based on chair placement at the end of the year, although, flutists can audition to play piccolo for the football season.

Academic teams

The school has a small but recognized Science Olympiad team that has qualified for the state competitions virtually every year. The team received fourth-place at the regional level during the Winter-Spring season of 2007, and on April 14th of that year several team members placed at the Ohio Science Olympiad States competition.

The school has a chapter of the Ohio Junior Classical League, which has consistently performed well at state competitions.

SMFHS also has a notable Speech and Debate team, which received 2nd place at the OHSSL District Competition in 2008. It often sends members to the national competition, including a Policy debate team in 2008.

Academic Challenge team

The Stow-Munroe High School Academic Challenge team is the school's quiz tournament team. The team was founded in 2005, and participates in Ohio Academic Challenge (OAC) as well as National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) and the Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE) tournaments. In the 2007-2008 season the team qualified for NAQT nationals three times, PACE nationals once, made the finals in the fall and winter OAC tournaments, and got fourth place overall in the "Academic Challenge" television show. At the NAQT nationals in May, 2008, the team was the highest rated Ohio team in the nation and had the highest rated individual Ohio player, Ike Jose. In its first two years the team only played nine matches and only had 6 members by the end of the 2006-2007 season. Because of winning eight of the nine matches, however, it was ranked third in state and 48th in the nation.cite web|url=http://ratings.aiquizbowl.com/index.php|title=National Standings|accessdate=2008-05-28] It has always been coached by Catherine Howard.

The varsity team won $3,000 on the television show for winning their match and being in the top 10 schools overall,cite web|url=http://www.newsnet5.com/sponsor/2721400/detail.html|title=Academic Challenge Television Show Results|accessdate=2008-05-28] placed second in the fall and first in the winter OAC tournaments, and won the PACE regional (qualifying them for PACE nationals).cite web|url=http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=5339|title=PACE Great Lake Regional Results|accessdate=2008-05-26] At the 2008 NAQT national tournament, Stow finished in a tie for 27th place nationally out or 178 teams. Athletics

The school currently offers twenty-four varsity athletic teams, which are known as the Bulldogs. They compete in the newly formed Northeast Ohio Conference, which began play in the fall of 2006. Prior to 2006, Stow was a member of the Western Reserve Conference since 1996 and the Metro league from 1937-1996. Most teams play their home matches at Stow-Munroe Falls High School except for the swimming and diving teams, who have meets at the Akron General Hospital Welness Center in Stow; and the bowling teams, who have their home meets at the Sto-Kent Family Lanes in Stow.

In 2002, the Stow-Munroe Falls High School main gym was seen on ESPN highlights when current Cleveland Cavaliers star LeBron James, then still in high school at nearby St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, slammed the ball hard in a pre-season basketball scrimmage, bringing the rim completely off the backboard.
