Leith Athletic F.C.

Leith Athletic Football Club are a football club from the Leith area of Edinburgh, Scotland. Members of Division One of the East of Scotland Football League, the club plays most of its games at Leigh Links.

History

Original club

They were formed in in 1887, playing their home games at New Meadowbank. The club were members of the Scottish Football League, enjoying several years in the top division in the 1890s and 1920s. However, after suffering relegation to C Division in 1948 they began to struggle financially and eventually resigned from the League and folded in 1954. Had they continued for one more season league reconstruction would have returned them to the second tier of Scottish football.

Modern club

A new Leith Athletic were formed in 1996, primarily as a club for boys football, with teams at various age groups between 5 and 21, whilst the club's adult side joined the Central Scottish Amateur Football League. In 2005 they attained their first Scottish amateur international, when Paul Lee played for the Scotland national amateur football team in a 2-1 success against Leinster, played in Dublin.

In 2008, Leith Athletic absorbed Edinburgh Athletic, taking the club's place in the East of Scotland Football League.
