Concept and creation

Dylan Sprouse has stated that the idea of twins living in a hotel was something he and his brother came up with when they were shooting Big Daddy and stayed in a hotel for four months.[1] Cole Sprouse has said of the characters Zack and Cody, "The characters were originally based off our personalities. In fact, they were originally named Dylan and Cole."[2]

Character information

Cody was born at St. Joseph's Hospital in Seattle, Washington at 6:40 on a Saturday.[3] The year of his birth is not clear. In The Suite Life on Deck episode, "Das Boots", it is said to be 1993.[4] However, in the episode of The Suite Life of Zack & Cody titled "Poor Little Rich Girl", a baby video of he and his brother is date-stamped September 23, 1992.[5] Cody is more erudite, mature, and intelligent than his twin brother Zack. Cody also tends to be more sensitive, caring and better behaved than his brother, but he is not perfect; he has shown acts of meanness and greed. He generally receives good grades in school, and according to Zack, Cody has a 5.0 grade point average.[6] He is often referred to as a nerd, though he has stated that he prefers "educationally gifted". London Tipton, daughter of the man who owns the Tipton Hotel in which he resides for the duration of The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, has used him on various occasions to complete her school work. He shows less interest in girls than his brother, and typically doesn't date a lot. He is shown to have a strong, almost obsessive, fear of germs.[7][8] In "Big Hair & Baseball," it is revealed that he has astigmatism. Cody is proven to have a Swedish background in the Suite Life on Deck episode "The Swede Life", where it is shown that Zack and Cody's ancestors come from Sweden. He originally intended to attend Harvard University; however, he had a bad encounter with the Dean of Harvard, as he helped to lie when Zack dated the Dean's daughter.[6] Later on, he made a new decision to attend Yale. Cody has said that his biggest dream is to win a Nobel Prize.

Appearances

The Suite Life of Zack & Cody

After traveling around the nation, the twins and their mother Carey arrived in Boston, which became their new home until The Suite Life on Deck. He and Zack became friends with Maddie Fitzpatrick, and he kept a picture of her in his room when he later moved to the SS Tipton.[9] He has shown a passion for cooking, cleanliness, mime artistry, dance, and stamp collecting. Cody is known for doing well in school and showing interest in several intellectual activities. This has resulted in him attending math camp, winning a spelling bee, etc. He can be easily frightened, and often does worse at physical activities than Zack. He also won the election for 8th grade class president.

Like Zack, he inherits some musical talents from his parents. It is seen that he received singing talents like his mother, as seen in the episode Lip-Syncing in the Rain and Sleepover Suite, and is shown to have an acting ability. In addition to vocal ability, Cody plays the French horn[10] and the violin[citation needed]. In contrast to Zack, Cody is closer to his mother and heeds her advice. He has a great fear of horror movies; however, it was Zack rather than Cody who was more frightened by Zombie Mom.[11]

In the first season, Cody tends to be as much of a troublemaker as Zack. As the show progresses, his character develops into a type who generally only gets in trouble by mistake or (more often) due to Zack's influence. Additionally, Cody is often the victim of various sight gags (which range from humorous to sometimes traumatic). Some examples include being pushed in horse feces,[12] getting trampled,[13] and being frozen in ice (which he does not remember).[14] Cody is often shown wearing a sweater vest.

In the season one episode "The Fairest of Them All", Cody develops a major crush on Rebecca, a contestant in the Miss Mini-Miss junior beauty pageant that is being held at the Tipton, and disguises himself as a girl to get closer to her (though this was partly by accident as while trying to give Rebecca a bouquet of flowers, he puts on a blond wig in order to hide from Mr. Moseby). Though it is not mentioned, the kiss Cody receives from Rebecca at the end of the episode is likely his first kiss.

In the second season episode "Twins at the Tipton," Cody and Zack go on a double date with Janice and Jessica Ellis. Throughout the second season of the show, they go on double dates with Zack and Cody several times, though they seem to like Cody more than Zack. They return in the On Deck episode "Model Behavior", in which Cody believes that Bailey is jealous of Jessica. In the season two episode "Miniature Golf," Cody goes on a date with Barbara Brownstein. The two continue to date for the remainder of the series.

During the third season, Cody works part-time as a bag boy at the Paul Revere minimart over the summer holidays. This was used as a setting and theme for some episodes, most notably Summer of Our Discontent, Who's the Boss? and Baggage. Cody has also acted as producer of London Tipton's "Yay Me! Starring London Tipton" webcast, although he quit because London made him do ridiculous things on set. After London apologizes on her show, he becomes producer again. However, in Boo You, Woody has taken the role of producer.

Both himself and Zack are frequently shown arguing, disagreeing, and sometimes fighting in both series, however the twin siblings both share a platonic relationship with each other. Although he is also very considerate, he has tried on occasion to be a bit unpleasant like his brother. He loves to cook and show his emotions to everyone. He also enjoys hugs from his mother.

The Suite Life on Deck

In The Suite Life On Deck, Cody holds on to the same general personality he had in the original series. In the progression of the series, the twins have become less close. Cody shares a room with Woody Fink, a messy, overweight student. While at school on board the SS Tipton, Cody becomes the ship's towel boy to earn money after Zack maxes out both of their student cash cards on non-essential items, particularly food and gifts for girls Zack was interested in.[15]

He began to have a competitor in school, Bailey Pickett.[16] He had developed a crush on Bailey after finding out that she, who initially masqueraded as a boy due to the fact that Seven Seas High had no openings for female students, was a girl in the pilot episode. In the episode "Flowers and Chocolate, he and his then-girlfriend Barbara Brownstein (Sophie Oda) broke up after he found out Barbara had started dating his and Zack's friend Bob (Charlie Stewart).[17]

Cody tried to pursue Bailey several times throughout the first season of the series, most notably in the episode "International Dateline" when he planned on telling her how he felt at a school dance on the ship but was thwarted by Zack, London, Woody, Mrs. Pepperman (a woman looking for the senior citizens' karate class), and, repeatedly, by a supernatural event upon the ship's crossing the International Dateline which caused Cody to relive the previous several hours in time a la Groundhog Day; and, as revealed in the episode "It's All Greek to Me", even devising a six-month plan to win her heart; however, she was virtually oblivious to this. In the season one finale "Double Crossed" (part of the "Wizards on Deck with Hannah Montana" crossover special), after Hannah Montana gives Cody tickets to the concert in Hawaii, Bailey kisses him on the lips, starting their relationship.

In the second season of the series, Cody once substitutes for the home economics teacher, and all the girls in the class are shown to be very attracted to him.[18] In "Lost at Sea," Cody goes behind Bailey's back on a decision while the group is sailing in a lifeboat, which ends up with Bailey being angry with him and treating him badly as a result. After some advice from Zack, he reconciles with her and turns out to be the hero by figuring out a way off the island. Also in the second season, Cody becomes friends with Zack's new roommate Marcus Little, a former singing sensation. In the second season finale "Breakup in Paris," Cody and Bailey have a major argument that concludes with the pair agreeing to end their romantic relationship. However, it is shown that Cody still has feelings for Bailey.[19][20][21] In "A London Carol," an alternate future shows that Cody and Bailey are married, although the two at that point in time are still separated.

In the third season, Zack begins a romantic relationship with Maya Bennett, and Cody is shown to have a friendly relationship with her. In the episode "Computer Date," Arwin builds a supercomputer that starts to have affectionate feelings for Cody, who feels the same way. However, when Callie starts endangering Cody's friends, he is forced to shut her down. In the episode "The Play's The Thing", Cody writes a play that is an obvious portrayal of his view of his and Bailey's breakup, which causes Bailey to quit the play. Haley is killed at the end of the play, and Bailey runs off crying. Cody admits that the play was based on their breakup, and Zack convinces his brother to try to reconcile with Bailey, but when he attempts to do so, she slams the door in his face. In the "Twister" three-part special, Bailey decides that she still loves Cody, and they resume their relationship.

In "Graduation on Deck," Cody is rejected by Yale University. He is so sad that he almost refuses to speak as the valedictorian with Bailey, although finally he appears at the graduation ceremony and gives the speech. Near the end of the episode, Cody and Bailey kiss and say goodbye, and Cody promises to visit her at Yale as well as have a talk to the administrator for rejecting him.

In "Rollin' with the Holmies", it is revealed that Cody is a big fan of Sherlock Holmes and is the president of the "Boston Holmies" (a group of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts). He has demonstrated fluency in Mandarin Chinese [22] and Japanese.[23] He is also an avid environmental activist, often noting many environmental hazards around them; he once went so far as to take a stand as towel boy and enforce a one towel per customer policy.

The Suite Life Movie

Cody and Bailey originally plan to spend spring break together, but Cody decides instead to intern for Dr. Spaulding because the internship presents him with an opportunity to earn a scholarship to Yale. He writes an incredibly long letter to Bailey explaining why he chose the internship, but he starts to quarrel with Zack and the letter becomes lost. Because he is not allowed to adequately explain the situation to Bailey, she becomes upset with him.

Cody goes to the marine biology lab where he will intern, but due to actions by Zack that result in another quarrel between the brothers and damage to the lab's property, Cody's internship is terminated. This causes Cody to become more furious with Zack. Zack attempts to make it up to him, and he helps Cody to get an internship with Dr. Olsen in the Gemini Project.

While in the project the Zack and Cody eat a fruit that connects them telepathically: first through tactile sensation, then through empathy or emotions, and finally through a process called "the merge." Going through the first couple of stages helps the brothers to become closer by allowing them to sense what the other is thinking or feeling, but after discovering that the merge will combine them into a single personality, they try to escape.
